I gotta admit, before traveling to Greece my concept of Greek Food revolves around souvlaki, baklava, good olives and olive oil and feta cheese. Yes, that’s it!
We love food. We love traveling. We love eating good food when traveling! Our Greek Odyssey was all about seeing beautiful sites, relaxation and eating good food. We like recommending places we’ve been to and foods we’ve eaten. Here’s our favorites from Greece, food wise! 🙂
1. Fried Cheese
When we heard fried cheese, we readily thought greasy, unhealthy way to eat cheese – that we wouldn’t enjoy it. But the waiter insisted that we try it. He said it’s delicious and that their way of serving it (this instance in a street cafe near Acropolis Museum in Athens) is with sesame seeds and honey. So we ordered it and wow, it didn’t disappoint!
Here’s another version from a cafe in Plaka. Fried Cheese with cheese on top! 🙂 Delicious and flavourful!
And here is our top 1 and most loved! Fried cheese from Melitini in Oia, Santorini! Our lovely waitress said that the cheese they use is made in Naxos from goat’s milk! Super YUMMY!!
2. Spicy Sausage
If you like sausages, you have to try the different sausages served in Greece. Our favorite is the dish they call “Spetzofai”.
3. ‘Fresh from the Sea’ Seafood – Grilled, Fried and Sautéed!
Seafood can’t be any fresher than when a fisherman cooks it at his restaurant an delightfully serves it to you! When we were island hopping through Ios, Santorini and Crete, we came across some of the freshest, most delicious seafood dishes we’ve ever eaten! Pepper is particularly obsessed with calamari. He orders it at least once a day! Hahaha. 🙂 We tried a lot of different seafood dishes, shrimp, sword fish, octopus, squid, etc.
If you are in Ios, make sure to check out Akrogiali. It’s a cafe/restaurant near the port and the owner is a very friendly fisherman who serves some of the best seafood dishes in the island. This was recommended by our host at Galini Pension. It didn’t disappoint! We actually went back for another lunch the following day!
4. Meat. Meat . Meat. Cooked in so many ways possible!
5. Refreshing Salads 🙂
You can never go wrong with a Greek Salad. You just can’t! Even Pepper who isn’t a big salad eater, tried and enjoyed every salad we ordered during our time in Greece! Everything was fresh! Tomatoes are juicy and fresh and the feta! OMG the feta cheese. Nowhere near the ones we get back home. It’s so so so delicious and creamy!! 🙂
The first time I heard of and saw moussaka is on a tv cooking program. I thought of it as a healthier version of lasagna. But I was so wrong. It’s so much more! It, so so delicious!!
The AMAZING sweets!! Desserts! 🙂
One of the best desserts of my life is the Semolina Halvas that I had in Athens. OMG! Nothing compares to this! I’ve had semolina cake before and I loved it but I think this one topped that one! If you are in Athens, be sure to have a meal at Point Bar and Restaurant. In my opinion, it has the best view of the Acropolis and has some amazing menu! Please try their semolina halvas! 🙂
Cheap, filling, delicious and just DELICIOUS! Bougatsa is sold in the streets, bakeries and restaurants. I lost count of how many of this I ate! I tried both the custard and chocolate versions! The best one I had was from a bakery in Crete!
* Special Mention *
Gosh!! All that yummy food! (I have to say, i gained weight while in Greece!)
No wonder Greeks live long… They eat fresh, home grown food and live their lives in beautiful surroundings! I can definitely see myself retiring in Greece. The beaches, the food, the people! We can all live like Gods and Godesses!
See you in Greece!!
